    The mental health and emotional well-being of our Veterans is important to the MN Third District American Legion. "PTSD in veterans is a silent battle fought daily, a testament to their resilience and sacrifice. Acknowledging their struggle is the first step toward healing." Support for Veterans with PTSD Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that affects many veterans who have experienced the intense stress of combat or other traumatic events during their service. This invisible wound can lead to significant emotional and psychological challenges, impacting not only the veteran but also their family and friends. At the Minnesota Third District American Legion, we are committed to providing support and resources for veterans dealing with PTSD. Symptoms Intrusive Memories: Recurrent, unwanted memories of the traumatic event, nightmares, or flashbacks. Avoidance: Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event, avoiding places, activities, or people that remind them of the trauma. Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Feelings of hopelessness, negative thoughts about oneself or others, memory problems, and difficulty maintaining close relationships. Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: Being easily startled, feeling on guard, having trouble sleeping, and experiencing irritability, angry outbursts, or aggressive behavior. Find Support Support and Treatment Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and other forms of counseling. Medication: Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can help manage symptoms. Support Groups: Connecting with other veterans who understand the experience can provide invaluable emotional support. Call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1, or text 838255. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA): The VA offers comprehensive PTSD treatment programs.     Learn how you can become or nominate an Auxiliary Member for the Third District American Legion Auxiliary Member of the Year Award. Third District American Legion Auxiliary Member of the Year Award (Framed Certificate) Each Unit may submit one nomination per year (500 words or less), postmarked by March 1. The letter should describe how the nominee has made outstanding, continuous contributions to your Unit. Guidelines Narratives only — no photos, clippings, or articles Must be signed and dated by two Unit officers (include names, addresses, phone numbers, and signatures) Nominations remain active for three years (Units must re-submit after that) Notify the District Secretary if a nominee passes away during the three-year period Selection The recipient is chosen by previous award winners and the Third District Auxiliary Member of the Year. The award (framed certificate) is presented at the Third District Convention in May. Why Nominate? Every Unit has deserving members—whether working quietly behind the scenes or leading programs. Shaping Safe and Responsible Citizens at Legionville Legionville Safety Patrol Training Center The Minnesota Third District American Legion is proud to support Legionville, a unique educational camp dedicated to teaching safety and leadership to young students. Located on beautiful North Long Lake near Brainerd, Minnesota, Legionville Safety Patrol Training Center has been shaping the lives of young Minnesotans since 1936. Legionville is a week-long summer camp where students learn essential safety skills, leadership, and responsibility. The primary focus is on training School Safety Patrol members, but the program also includes a variety of other safety-related activities. The goal is to prepare students to be leaders in their schools and communities, ensuring a safer environment for everyone. At Legionville, participants will: Learn Safety Patrol Duties: Receive comprehensive training on how to effectively manage school crossings and ensure the safety of their fellow students. Develop Leadership Skills: Take part in activities that promote teamwork, responsibility, and leadership. Engage in Safety Education: Participate in classes and practical exercises covering a wide range of safety topics, including water safety, first aid, and emergency preparedness. I learned so much about government and made friends I’ll never forget. It gave me the confidence to pursue a career in public service." What is ALA Girls State? The Minnesota Third District American Legion proudly sponsors the American Legion Girls State program, a premier educational experience for high school junior girls. This unique opportunity allows young women to learn about government, develop leadership skills, and engage in the civic process, all while forming lifelong friendships and connections. Girls State is a week-long summer program designed to immerse students in the workings of state and local government. Selected participants, known for their leadership, character, and academic excellence, create and run their own mock government. This hands-on experience teaches them the responsibilities of various elected and appointed officials. Participants in Girls State will: Engage in Hands-On Learning: Experience the legislative process by drafting, debating, and passing bills. Develop Leadership Skills: Take on roles such as governor, mayor, senator, and other positions, gaining firsthand experience in public service and leadership.
