- Poppy Program | MN Thundering Third District | American Legion
Find out how you can help with The American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program. All proceeds go to support veterans in need. Poppy Program The American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program is one of the organization’s most recognized traditions, honoring the sacrifices of veterans while educating communities about the true cost of freedom. Each year, members distribute handmade red poppies as a symbol of remembrance for service members who have died in war. The program traces its roots back to World War I, inspired by the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” where red poppies grew among the graves of fallen soldiers. By wearing a poppy, individuals show their respect and gratitude for the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. Beyond remembrance, the Poppy Program also provides meaningful support to veterans and their families. Disabled and hospitalized veterans craft many of the poppies, giving them therapeutic activity and a source of income. Donations collected during Poppy Days are used exclusively for programs that directly benefit veterans, military, and their families—such as rehabilitation, assistance, and educational scholarships. Through this program, the Auxiliary not only preserves a symbol of honor and remembrance but also continues its mission of service by turning a small red flower into a powerful tool of hope and help.
