Help Commander Linda Dvorak reach her goals: Her Commander's Project raises funds for the Minnesota Veterans Assistance Fund (Fund 85) and benches and pillars for the new Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum at Camp Ripley. Out of the funds raise, 75% goes to Fund 85 and 25% to the museum. The Department Commander's Project each year is classified as Fund 82 under the Minnesota American Legion Foundation. Facebook Tips & FAQ's Pages vs. Groups Facebook is one of the most powerful online tools to reach people and promote your events & membership. Does this mean you need to have a Facebook Page? What about a Facebook group? Here are out thoughts on the matter... Page vs. Group: Pages are public, Groups need to be joined. Knowing what your looking to accomplish is the key. Use GROUPS for communicating amongst your members and coordinating volunteer needs, etc. Create a PAGE if you want to actively involve the public and invite them to your events, meetings, and activities. Creating Events It is essential that you create an event on Facebook for each of your activities. Using events has built in automations that do things like: Alert followers or people in your area that "Legion XYZ created an event you might like" Allows followers to click interested or going to your event, which sends them auto-alerts as the date draws near Allows you to add Co-Hosts of the event, which can increase the reach dramatically! Creating a Facebook event is pretty simple, but here's a quick run down on the steps to take: Login and Click Events Click Create an Event Enter your information, location, time and ALL the details you have about the event (menu, schedule, tickets, etc.) Upload a graphic that looks really nice and eye catching (when possible, ensure it is not a photo taken of an event flyer) Invite your followers to the event (sometimes FB will only allow you to invite 50 at a time, so come back often until you've invited everyone) Add a Co-Host if there is one (please note you need to first Follow the Host on Facebook to add them to the event) Regularly post in the "Discussion" section of your event to get people excited. Use pictures of items, food, people, and talk about what will be at the event Send Those Invites! When you log into your Facebook page, click on the left-hand side to go into the Meta Business Suite. Scroll to the "Grow Your Audience" section. Click on the Send Invites button and Select to Send all invites. View Example How does this help? Well, for example, let's say one of your patrons shared your post about the upcoming Fish Fry. Her friend Sally liked the post and came to the fish fry. Now she gets an invite from you to follow/like your page and she does because she really enjoyed the fish and wants to know when it's happening again. Join Community Bulletin Boards & Groups Nearly every community has at least 1 Facebook bulletin board. Make sure to join as many as possible AND search out Legion specific groups or those related to regular activities (such as karaoke, bingo, fish fry, etc.) Tips for Posting on Boards You can share to your page and up to 3 groups at once using the Meta Business Suite (see example video ) Be mindful, don't over post. Once or Twice a week is definitely plenty. Plus, some boards have rules on business Posting (make sure to read the group rules) Add bolded text by Sharing from your event. This feature is only available when you click Share to Group (see example video ) Sharing the event you created to a group is more effective than just a graphic and text. Why? It allows people to click "interested" or "going" which means they get those automated reminders. Post Stories & Reels Stories are a quick way to be seen as they show up right at the top of the Facebook Feed. Use large text and minimal information in your graphics and add your link to the event or to your Facebook page for more info. Reels are a bit more challenging as they require videos. Videos can only be 60 seconds long. We recommend using actual footage from your event, during set up, etc. A strong example of how to use a Reel: Take a quick video of your silent auction items and post as a reel so people can see the fun items available! Adding music can also make all the difference! Follow your fellow Legion Family Posts! The more followers a page has, the more people see your content. Do your part to follow other American Legions. Make sure to: Follow the National, Department, and District Pages Search for Legions and Auxiliary Units in your state (and out of state) and follow them (you may even get some new ideas) Make a difference, become a member of the SAL. American Legion Boys State is a premier leadership and citizenship program designed to provide high school juniors with an immersive experience in the democratic process. Hosted annually, this week-long program offers young men the opportunity to learn about the structure and function of government by creating and running their own simulated state. Why Participate? Engage in Hands-On Learning: Experience the inner workings of government by assuming roles in various branches and levels of government. From city council to governor, participants engage in hands-on activities that mirror real-life political processes. Develop Leadership Skills: Develop critical leadership skills through practical experience, teamwork, and public speaking. Boys State encourages participants to take initiative, solve problems, and make informed decisions. Network with Peers: Form lasting friendships with fellow delegates from across the state. The shared experience of Boys State creates a network of peers who are passionate about leadership and service. Civic Engagement: Gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities and the importance of active participation in the democratic process. Boys State instills a sense of duty and the value of contributing to your community and country. Build Confidence: Gain a deeper understanding of citizenship and the democratic process, empowering them to make a difference in their communities. Program Highlights: Government Simulation: Participate in mock elections, legislative sessions, and judicial proceedings. Guest Speakers: Learn from experienced professionals, including elected officials, military personnel, and community leaders. Workshops and Seminars: Engage in interactive sessions covering topics such as leadership, ethics, and public service. Community Service: Take part in activities that promote civic responsibility and community involvement. How to Apply Eligible high school juniors interested in participating in Boys State should contact their local American Legion Post for more information on the application process and sponsorship opportunities. Membership in The American Legion Auxiliary shall be limited to the: Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion; and Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who served in either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918 and any time after December 7, 1941 who, being a citizen of the United States at the time of their entry therein served on active duty in the Armed Forces of any of the governments associated with the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge; Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who were in the Armed Forces of the United States during either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918; and any time after December 7, 1941 who served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge; and to those women who of their own right are eligible for membership in The American Legion. * Male spouses are now eligible to join the Auxiliary! * A woman who is eligible for American Legion membership is eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary regardless of whether or not she is a member of The American Legion. However, eligibility of her female relatives (sister, mother, direct descendants) and/or spouse depends upon her membership in The American Legion.
